About Chris Gough Palmer

Kia ora.
I'm a multidisciplinary designer and brand strategist based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, working with clients across the globe.

I learned my craft at world-class agencies BBDO and TBWA before taking the leap and co-founding The New Black – an independent studio I led for 14 years. We worked with clients across Europe, Africa, the UK and US, from Coca-Cola and Virgin to BMW and FIFA, alongside ambitious startups and luxury brands building something distinctive. Some had massive budgets, some had massive vision. The best had both.

Since establishing myself in Aotearoa New Zealand, I've continued working across borders – helping both iconic local companies and international businesses navigate complex brand challenges. Whether you're blue-chip or bootstrapped, I'm drawn to businesses with backbone and the commitment to build something that lasts.

Here's the thing: I'm commercially minded first. I don't just make things look good – I solve business problems. My approach is understanding your commercial reality, then crafting design solutions that actually move the bottom line. Strategic thinking, cultural intelligence, and craft that doesn't compromise.

Beyond client work, I'm actively engaged in cultural learning and investigation, mentoring emerging practitioners, developing typefaces nobody asked for, and pro bono work that matters. This isn't distraction – it's what keeps my practice sharp, culturally grounded, and interesting.

If you're seeking a strategic creative partner who understands business as much as design – and doesn't take themselves too seriously – let’s chat.
